Rethinking Leadership, Networking and Lollipop Moments

On January 8, 2011, I participated in my first-ever UBC Student Leadership Conference (SLC). The SLC is a one-day, student-organized conference at UBC that connects student leaders with alumni and motivational speakers.

The theme was “Rethinking Leadership,” and the conference was very successful at presenting different perspectives on what the word leadership means.

The conference opened with a humourous and moving talk by TEDx speaker and Mount Allison University alumnus Drew Dudley. Dudley challenged our ideas of what leadership is, urging us to abandon the idea that to be a leader you have to be the best at everything, focused on filling out that “double-sided sheet of paper” he calls a resume. He said that too often we strive towards a goal of being “the best you can be.” This is an unattainable vision: what is “the best”? How do we know when we achieve it? Dudley said to focus instead on “lollipop moments,” little moments in life where you can change someone’s outlook, point of view, or decision without meaning to—by being yourself.

Delegates at the SLC were given a variety of options. I attended an Alumni-graduate student lunch, where I mingled with students and alumni. Afterwards I attended a talk by motivational speaker and Canadian Cheryl Cran, who talked about generational differences in the workplace between individuals from generation X, Y and Baby Boomers.

The closing keynote speakers were the boys of MTV’s The Buried Life. These four humble (and cute!) boys challenged us to think about the question that shaped their choices: What do you want to do before you die?

In addition, I presented a workshop titled “Bridging the Gap: Networking in an Ever-Growing Society.” I’ve included the audio and the Prezi presentation below.

Maybe it was because it was my first and only SLC, but I found it inspiring and motivational. The organizers did a great job providing students with an outlet in which they can express their creativity, leadership skills, all while networking with their peers.
